Corinthian Velma by LondonJohnIII Corinthian Velma by LondonJohnIII
Hello,

Well, 2016 is almost over. It's become a cliche to talk about all the famous names taken from us. Something in yesterday's death of Carrie Fisher got me thinking about art again. Recovering from my eye troubles, it's been too long since I picked up a pen and drew something. I decided to change that today.

Taking as my starting point an artists whom I knew had to recover from ill health - Lovis Cornith (1858-1925).  Corinth was born in a small town in what was then Prussia, but the town is now in Russia. He studied in Paris and Berlin and was a foremost exponent of Impressionism. Initially hostile to the growing school of Expressionism, Lovis changed his mind when he was recovering from a stroke. Needing to adjust to rebuilding capacity and skill, he found the freedom of expression offered by the new style suitable for his change in circumstances.

Favoring a cool and subdued colour palette, Lovis enjoyed making use of rough, lively, brush strokes and stark contrast of background against foreground subjects. He never painted a lady clothed when he could get away with painting a nude.

With all this in mind, I made an initial attempt at his later style - depicting, of course, Velma. One legged and nude and pondering the strange twists and turns the world of the artist can take.

Here's hoping 2017 is better for everyone.

I want to thank those who offered kind words and constructive feedback for my efforts this year.  :)

Best wishes to those who stop by here,

John

Good to see you're well. Your absence had me worried for a bit.
I like the quick, sketchy feel, as if our artist was looking more at her than at his canvas.

What a beautiful picture. She looks quite lovely. And - as ever - wonderfully, skillfully drawn.

Adore the thoughtful look in her eyes.

Happy New Year! I must say, I like your art for the range of styles just as much as for the subject material. Maybe even a little more so.

I agree. It's actually very cool to see the same subject rendered in so many different styles. And it's a great way for john to grow as an artist, becoming more versatile and finding creative inspiration in the unlikeliest of places.
