Description

Hi,

Yesterday derby80 offered the idea of keeping with the Sci-Fi angle and trying to depict a cyberpunk Velma around the style of an older artist. Quite how old, I wasn't sure; so I went with late 19th century.

It seemed a cool and exciting idea.  :)  I set to work as soon as I saw the suggestion and spent most of the rest of the day trying to put together a suitable Submission.

My first thought went to typical dark and noir colour schemes of Cyberpunk. Then the use of technology. Dark palettes, cyber limbs and CRT screens. Trying to piece together a Submission around these ideas and themes was the first hurdle. I considered the interesting work of a great American artist - Edward Hopper. But I made several goes at his work last year and wanted to try a new artist before revisiting Hopper. I then had an idea - orange is obviously associated with Velma and my mind jumped to another great American artist - William Merritt Chase (1848-1916).

William Chase lived a full life. He served briefly in the US Navy, traveled Europe, studied under the greats of the day and enjoyed considerable success in his family life and held high professional reputation as both a teacher and artist.

He's frequently associated with the Impressionists. I was drawn to his work given the dark colour schemes of many of his paintings - contrasted with his use of reds and oranges. His portraits are remarkable. William often worked in oil.

So, here's my initial thoughts on a cyberpunk idea wrapped up with a late Victorian vibe of Velma's dress and brass cyber leg.

As always, I hope she amuses more than she offends.

Best wishes to those who stop by here.

John

Beautiful! Love the cyberpunk theme and mish-mash of old/new. I'm with derby80 and also wonder how daphne might look accompanying Velma in one of your pieces. Hmmm...  Love her brass cyber prosthetic! It contrasts well with her real barefooted leg. Outstanding!!!
