Description

Hi,

Well, I finally got around to finishing an idea I've had swirling about for a while. This inspiration dates back to December last year.

londonjohniii.deviantart.com/a…

When fellow DevArt guy, good ol' Jerek, mentioned the art style of the comic duo John Byrne (b 1950-) and Terry Austin (b 1952-) - famous for their seminal work on The Uncanny X-Men back in the 1980's.

Byrne and Austin helped define the tone, look and feel of the X-Men through the Dark Phoenix cycle and other important story arcs.

John Byrne has worked on the biggest titles in comics - X-Men, Fantastic Four, Superman...

His work has earned him a deserved spot in the Eisner Hall of Fame.

But, I was also aware of a Scottish poet, play-write and painter - John Byrne (b 1940-). This John Byrne is a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art and a former lover of actress Tilda Swinton and wrote the screenplay for Tutti-Frutti in 1987 (which helped launch the acting career of Harry Potter's Haggrid's Robbie Coltrane!)

The play-write Byrne's style is interesting to me in that it's very stylized. Sometimes it's almost caricature, sometimes it's very Academically figurative. his painting relies on pale areas of negative pace - with subtle and limited palettes for the figure work. He seems to work in watercolour and oil. So I used a watercolour style for this Submission, trying to capture the light, airy and frequently surreal feel to his compositions and odd 'painterly' approach to using colour and the paint itself.

So, this was a mash-up - two Byrnes combine. An effort to unite the bright four-colour palatte of Terry Austin and John Byrne for Marvel and the watercolor approach of John Byrne the artist. The idea of uniting around Velma dressed a Dark Phoenix came about thinking about Velma's usual dress code and colour scheme - it just made sense given the X-Men connection. :)

This idea took a long time to germinate and turn into a Submission. I hope this one legged Velma amuses more than she offends. :)

Best wishes to those who stop by here,

John

Hooray! John Byrne(s) make his debut! What a brilliant idea to do a mash up of the two Bynes, and I love Velma's costume. Fantastic pose and anatomy, too, and the shading is superb!
