Hi,
Phew. I've spent almost the entire day on this submission. I'm trying to alternate between fine art and comic/illustrative styles to explore. Hopefully that'll help me from getting bored or stale. :/
I've been thinking about an excellent American artist - Winslow Homer (1836-1910) for a while. He started out as a commercial artist before, ultimately, turning to fine art watercolours. His art style focused on a realistic representation of the world.
Winslow's art explored mostly watercolour and oil - with an obsession with strong linear compositions. This linear style informed my choice for using the approximation of the 1950's Chevy: a thematic 'prop' to use for the central idea and to help 'pin' Velma's figure to the landscape in a linear manner. Winslow's colour palette contained free amounts of shades of blues and turquoise, many earth tones and a rich use of shadows.
This took a long time to work through. I'm glad I did it, though. I learned a lot from the need to focus on a more painterly approach to subjects.
I hope this one legged Velma amuses more than she offends.
Best wishes to those who stop by here.
John

This GAZ-21 "VOLGA" is almost a pipe blue dream of 90% of Soviet citizens! Yes ! It was copied, but not completely, it turned out to be more elegant and beautiful than its prototype... I would love to buy this car now, but there is no such big money!
